With less than 24 hours being left before the deadline to apply franchise tag, the Seattle Seahawks took a safe action by placing the tag on kicker Olindo Mare, who made 24-of-26 field goals last season and will turn 37 in 2010.
It was called a safe action because first of all tagging a kicker isn’t a prohibitive thing when it comes to money- Mare will earn $2.814 million this season if a long-term extension is not worked out, and then kickers have proven they can be effective into their 40’s. Thus placing the franchise on Mare will not cost the Seahawks much but still help them retain an effective kicker.
Mare, the 13th-year veteran, spent all of his first ten NFL seasons with the Miami Dolphins and had his first best stretch in his career from 2000 to 2001, making 47-of-52 attempts as a kicker in Dolphins jersey. He spent one season with the New Orleans Saints before joining the Seahawks. And the stretch from 2008 to 2009 was considered to be his second best. He made 24-of-27 field goals in 2008 season and had 44 touchbacks in total over the last two seasons.
